Tips to Score Good Marks: NEET exam

NEET is one of the most highly pursued exams in our country. Every year over a million students appear for it aspiring to get admission in India’s top medical colleges. To achieve this feat one must score enough marks to pass the cut-off.

Sometimes students might feel stuck or go through certain general issues while preparing for the exam. We will identify those problems today and suggest some tips to counteract them. This should help you get a great score in the NEET exam

The Problems Often Faced by Students:

  • Vast syllabus:

The syllabus of NEET is vast. That is because it contains topics from both Class 11 and Class 12. The subjects tested in NEET are Physics, Chemistry, and Biology wherein Biology carries the highest weightage. These subjects are tough as is and when you combine the syllabus of Class 11 and Class 12, it becomes an exhaustive task to prepare for the exam.

  • Lack of discipline

Many NEET aspirants fail to maintain a strict discipline ad study schedule due to which they fall behind in their studies. Distractions, amusements, and procrastination are common problems that cause students to lose out on exams.

  • Amateur time management skills:

When students cannot manage their time effectively they can never complete the exhaustive syllabus required to crack the NEET exam. Most often students find it hard to balance their studies with their daily routine.

  • Incorrect study approach:

Another common factor that is a hurdle in flawless exam preparation for NEET is approaching the syllabus the wrong way. The few ways that students do this are:

  1. Not giving each subject its due: Students often get perplexed about the correct way to study Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. They sometimes focus more on the subject they like more or the one they think carries more weightage like Biology.
  2. Not practicing enough from the Previous Years’ Question Papers (PYQP): Past papers have extreme importance in cracking the NEET exam. Some students casually go through them and fail to utilize this important study material for their exam preparation.
  3. Not enough mock tests or taking them without due earnestness: If students do not take enough mock tests before appearing for the actual exam or go through many mock tests but without being serious enough and attempting them casually, it will cost them big time in the exam.
  4. Not performing serious test analysis: A lot of students do practice from past papers and mock tests but fail to perform a self-assessment of their progress after taking the test. This is a very wrong approach to taking a mock test and will not help them in the long run.
  5. Incorrect approach while attempting the exam:

Another common mistake is not having the correct approach while giving the exam. This can happen if the student is distracted or even over ambitious answering questions that they are not sure of in hopes to get more marks. Not keeping an eye on the time while giving the exam can be another issue that costs students.

  • Fear

Fear and anxiety are other dangerous things that NEET aspirants let themselves overwhelm with. Fear of the exam can cause you to lose a calm headspace that is very important to ace the exam.

  • Neglecting health:

As some students face episodes of procrastination, others can overwork themselves not taking care of their mind and body. By the time they reach the actual examination date, they are worn out and unable to perform their absolute best which is of utmost requirement to pass the exam with good marks.

What to do to rectify the problems?

  • Break up the syllabus:

Have a keen look at the syllabus and break it down into doable chunks. Since the syllabus is vast, studying it into sections will help you get through most of it without too much of a hassle. You can break up the syllabus as per the weightage or the difficulty level and then have a go at it section by section.

  • Know the pattern of the exam:

Being aware of the exam pattern is an essential thing to do. This allows you to prepare for the exam keeping in mind the exam requirements. What kinds of questions are asked in the exam? What topics are asked often? What is the marking scheme? What is the time limit of each section? How are questions marked? Knowing all these questions will help prepare optimally for the NEET exam.

  • Make a timetable and stick to it

Make a study plan and be sure to put in enough breaks in between to make sure that you stay focused and do not tire yourself out. So take a 5-10 minute break after a 30-minute study session. Also, make sure that you do not study only all the difficult topics one day. Separate two difficult topics with an easier topic in between to let your brain focus better.

  • The right way to study

Each subject should be given its proper due. For this, you must be aware of your strength and weakness and divide your time to work on your weakness and make the most of your strengths. You must also be aware of the right resources to use for each subject and how much time each subject requires from you. For Biology, NCERT should be enough to prepare for the NEET exams. A lot of reading and memorization should be the focus for Biology. If you are thorough with NCERT and feel like you need extra study material then you can also use USS books.

For Physics and Chemistry, you must use the NCERT textbook along with a good MCQ book.  You must go through 100 MCQs daily. You can alternate between Physics and Chemistry every two days. Knowing the theory is equally important as going through the numerical questions. If you are thorough with the theoretical concepts you will be successfully able to apply them to the numerical problems.

You must give a lot of test series when you have about 5 months left for the exam. Also, the extensive practice of previous years’ questions papers in the last two months is extremely essential. Get yourself NEET PYQP with Answer Keys so that you can look for ideal solutions after giving a practice test.

Also, make sure that you properly analyze your mock tests and PYQP to assess your progress. Give these exams in all seriousness exactly like the main exam. Make sure there is no distraction while giving the mock exams. Dedicate a good couple of hours to assess your performance in the mock exam.

  • Things to keep in mind during the exam

Don’t get anxious during the exam. Stay confident. Do not interact with other students during the exam. Focus on your exam and only that. Go through the questions that seem easy first. With the time left, attempt the more difficult questions. Answer only the questions that you are sure of to escape negative marking.

  • Importance of a positive mindset

A positive mindset is key to stay focused. So stay positive and avoid negative thinking, people, and environments. NEET is a very crucial stepping stone in your career but it is not the final deciding factor. So do not let anxiety get the better of you.

  • Take care of yourself:

It is a good thing to stay dedicated to your aim. However, in doing this make sure that you do not compromise on food and sleep. You need your body in good shape and condition to give the exam to the best of its ability. So take care of your health. Get proper sleep and you will see your performance improving.

Every student has a different style of learning. Experiment with what works best for you but stay dedicated. These tips will surely help you to stay on top of your studies and ace the NEET exam. All you need to do is keep your head in the game, stay positive and rock the exam. Best of luck!
